I haven’t posted in six months, maybe more. A lot has changed. If you want to catch up, I put a blog up on the website. I recommend beverage and maybe a box of tissues. I’m just trying to get through the tough stuff so I can get back to what I love—making fantasy content.

Me: what if it was scaled up and it was actually a whole mountain range under the sea that was only accessible a few times per year during a super full moon when the tide was out and adventurers had to strategize how to get the treasure within before the tide came back and the caverns inside flooded and they drowned.

I still can’t believe this place is real! The Cenotes of Mexico are sinkholes that create open caverns and caves in the middle of otherwise dry land. They are so deep and vast that they were once thought to be portals to the underworld.

Cenotes contain mostly fresh water, but occasionally they are so deep they mix with salty ocean water. That was the case here, at a Cenote called “El Pit”. About 40-50 feet down, fresh and salt water mix creating a halocline layer where everything goes from clear to blurry for a few moments during the descent (to me it felt like I forgot to pop in my contacts first thing in the morning).

As we got deeper, we observed another natural phenomenon, a hydrogen sulfide cloud with a large fossilized tree branch poking through (once part of the layer of forest that collapsed into the pit). It felt like being in a spooky, foggy enchanted forest but 90ft underwater.

As we made our way back towards the cavern’s entrance, a few radiant beams of sunlight pierced through the surface of the water. Looking back behind me and then towards the light, it felt like I was ascending through the pit of the Ancient Cistern in Skyward Sword (if it were completely flooded). *I was not chased by a hoard of cursed bokoblins* but I certainly had my head on a swivel.

This experience was extra special to me, not only because we were able to partake in a very haunted, spooky dive for Halloween/Day of the Dead, but also because Juniper will embark on some deep water excursions during her adventures as well. Now you all know firsthand where that inspiration comes from 🤿✨

So very much missing mornings in Playa Del Carmen! Dave was asked to come to a last minute work conference and he kindly asked if I could join so I could enjoy the beaches and get some writing done! He surprised me about a week or two prior with the news and I’m so grateful it all worked out! I worked all summer and hardly got any time on the water so it was extra special to splash around and work on some concepts for Juniper and specifically her castle town, Bryneveil. I know I’m privileged to say this but there is nothing like travel for world building! While we were there, we also got to SCUBA dive a few cenotes, which are basically underground sinkhole and open cave systems that the ancient civilizations believed to be sacred portals to the underworld/spirit realms (hoping the go pro footage turns out!) it was also Halloween and Day of the Dead so the streets were packed with costumes and people celebrating, a really beautiful way to experience this time of year. I’ll share more later, still sorting through everything, but it’s 40 and cloudy here this morning so I thought anyone else who needed a little sunshine might appreciate this 🫶☕️✨
